AUWRC Collaboration with the AU Department of Theater & Dance
In September of 2024 the AUWRC was invited to partner with the AU Department of Theater and Dance for their showing of “Wellesley Girl”, a show that explores the resilience of a Massachusetts community facing dire water quality issues.
The AUWRC provided a educational display for the patrons of the performance which contained helpful resources and information about harmful algae blooms, citizen science water quality monitoring, and drinking water safety. An estimated 820 attendees viewed the show and associated AUWRC materials.
Wellesley Girl takes place in a dystopian future in 2465 where only a few citizens remain in an enclave of four communities in Massachusetts, enclosed within walls to protect themselves from the outside world. The play tackles issues of governance, decision-making, and survival, mirroring the delicate balance we must maintain with natural resources like water. Just as the characters in the play must navigate moral and ethical decisions under pressure, we too face the ongoing challenge of managing Alabama’s water systems amidst increasing environmental changes.
