The AU Water Resources Center and AWW in partnership with the Alabama Cooperative Extension System and the AU College of Agriculture recently held the 2014 Tallapoosa Basin Conference (TBC). The TBC was initiated back in 2005 as part of a large, multi-disciplinary research and outreach effort funded by the USDA-CSREES known as the Tallapoosa Watershed Project. A variety of grants, funds and partners were involved in the conference through the years.

The previous seven conferences covered research, outreach/education, and management issues in the Tallapoosa River Basin. The conference grew in popularity and attendance, with increased emphasis on broadening its appeal beyond scientists and agency folks to include watershed residents, property owners, educators and businesspeople. In the past few years, the conference has been emulated in other river basins, including the Coosa and Black Warrior basins.
After a two-year hiatus, there have been several exciting development in the basin and in the state, including efforts to develop a comprehensive statewide water management policy, advancements in land-management tools, and local success stories within the basin. Thus, we had a LOT to talk about! This year’s conference was on Friday, May 30th at the Auburn University Water Resources Center at the CASIC Building in AU’s Research Park.
