Well, it does! <\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW161482178 BCX0\">Even in rain-rich Alabama.<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW161482178 BCX0\"> <\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW161482178 BCX0\">Though the plentiful rainfall across the <\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW161482178 BCX0\">s<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW161482178 BCX0\">tate (&gt;55 in\/year on average) indeed diminishes the amount of irrigation needed, supplemental irrigation has been shown to significantly increase yields, reduce risks of crop losses, and enhance farmers\u2019 resilience<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW161482178 BCX0\"> in the face of droughts and climate change. <\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW161482178 BCX0\">Even short-term droughts during the growing season can cause unsustainable damage during critical stages of growth. <\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW161482178 BCX0\">While t<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW161482178 BCX0\">hese short-term droughts are less likely to affect regional hydrology<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW161482178 BCX0\">, <\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW161482178 BCX0\">they can have devastating impacts on crop yields. <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000\"><span data-contrast=\"auto\" xml:lang=\"EN-US\" lang=\"EN-US\" class=\"TextRun SCXW161482178 BCX0\"><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW161482178 BCX0\">A <\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW161482178 BCX0\">moderate amount of irrigation (4 inches\/season on average) has the potential to protect crops <\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW161482178 BCX0\">from such losses<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW161482178 BCX0\">. <\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW161482178 BCX0\">Preventing such crop losses improves watershed health in several ways. A watershed, also known as a drainage basin, is an area of land where precipitation drains into a common outlet such as a river or bay. For example, all the land in the Middle Alabama River watershed \u201csheds\u201d precipitation to the Alabama River. This program is not funded through the Farm Bill, but by the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nrcs.usda.gov\/programs-initiatives\/watershed-and-flood-prevention-operations-wfpo-program\">Watershed Protection and Flood Prevention Program<\/a> (Public Law 83-566). PL 83-566 authorizes the USDA to provide technical and financial assistance to state and local agencies to plan and implement projects that protect small watersheds.<\/span><\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\" xml:lang=\"EN-US\" lang=\"EN-US\" class=\"TextRun Highlight SCXW103524090 BCX0\"><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW103524090 BCX0\"> <\/span><\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\" xml:lang=\"EN-US\" lang=\"EN-US\" class=\"TextRun SCXW103524090 BCX0\"><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW103524090 BCX0\">Alabama is the first state where these funds have been used to assist individual farmers to install irrigation infrastructure.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p>[\/et_pb_text][et_pb_text _builder_version=&#8221;4.19.0&#8243; _module_preset=&#8221;default&#8221; global_colors_info=&#8221;{}&#8221;]<\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\" xml:lang=\"EN-US\" lang=\"EN-US\" class=\"TextRun SCXW153579451 BCX0\" style=\"color: #000000\"><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW153579451 BCX0\">Before federal funds can be released to farmers within a watershed, a Watershed <\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW153579451 BCX0\">Management <\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW153579451 BCX0\">Plan and Environmental Assessment must be completed and approved. Auburn University is working with SWCC to create the watershed plans for this project with the help of teams at the University of Alabama in Huntsville and Tuskegee University.<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW153579451 BCX0\"> These plans inventory existing environmental resources, analyze the regional hydrology<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW153579451 BCX0\">,<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW153579451 BCX0\"> and inform where and how irrigation can be<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW153579451 BCX0\"> <\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW153579451 BCX0\">sustainably<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW153579451 BCX0\"> implemented. <\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW153579451 BCX0\">Producers in <\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW153579451 BCX0\">the<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW153579451 BCX0\"> <\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW153579451 BCX0\">watershed<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW153579451 BCX0\"> can <\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW153579451 BCX0\">then <\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW153579451 BCX0\">apply to the program through the SWCC. AUWRC is nearing the completion of the watershed plan for the Middle Alabama River Basin.
