{"id":887,"date":"2014-04-15T16:31:14","date_gmt":"2014-04-15T16:31:14","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/wp.auburn.edu\/aww\/?p=887"},"modified":"2023-05-08T13:36:17","modified_gmt":"2023-05-08T13:36:17","slug":"meet-the-fine-folks-that-keep-aww-growing-statewide","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/aaes.auburn.edu\/wrc\/meet-the-fine-folks-that-keep-aww-growing-statewide\/","title":{"rendered":"Meet the fine folks that keep AWW growing statewide!"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><em>by Rita Grub<\/em><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Calibri\"><span style=\"color: #000000;font-size: medium\">I bet you\u2019re enjoying the warmer temps and signs of spring \u2013 soft greens and colors we haven\u2019t seen for several months.<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;font-size: medium\">\u00a0 <\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;font-size: medium\">And maybe you\u2019re like me \u2013 amazed that over 25% of 2014 is in the past.<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;font-size: medium\">\u00a0 <\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;font-size: medium\">It\u2019s been a BUSY time for AWW:<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>There have been over 30 workshops and recertification sessions this year<span style=\"font-family: Calibri;font-size: medium\">\u00a0 <\/span>&#8211;<span style=\"font-family: Calibri;font-size: medium\">\u00a0 <\/span>awesome!!!<\/li>\n<li>There have been 75 new Water Chemistry and 76 new Bacteriological monitors trained in these workshops<\/li>\n<li>And almost 30 monitors have been recertifed!<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Calibri\"><span style=\"color: #000000;font-size: medium\">This is possible because of AWW\u2019s elite group of 32 fabulous Citizen Trainers \u2013 folks who have chosen to go above and beyond the call of duty to protect Alabama\u2019s precious waters.<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;font-size: medium\">\u00a0 <\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;font-size: medium\">Special thanks to the following citizen trainers who have conducted workshops in 2014:<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Elizabeth Brooke<\/li>\n<li>Francine Hutchinson<\/li>\n<li>Patti Hurley<\/li>\n<li>John Kulbitskas<\/li>\n<li>Homer Singleton<\/li>\n<li>Mike Shelton<\/li>\n<li>Taylor Steele<\/li>\n<li>Ginger Taylor<\/li>\n<li>Isabella Trussell<\/li>\n<li>Susan (Soos) Weber<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;font-family: Calibri;font-size: medium\">Find an AWW trainer near you at our website,   at <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.alabamawaterwatch.org\/about\/trainers.html\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline\"><span style=\"color: #0000ff;font-family: Calibri;font-size: medium\">www.alabamawaterwatch.org\/about\/trainers.html<\/span><\/span><\/a><span style=\"color: #000000;font-family: Calibri;font-size: medium\">. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;font-family: Calibri;font-size: medium\">We have five new Trainers in the AWW Trainer group! Please welcome:<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Calibri\"><span style=\"color: #000000;font-size: medium\"><strong>Michael Freeman<br \/>\n<a href=\"https:\/\/aaes.auburn.edu\/wrc\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2014\/04\/MFreeman.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" alt=\"MFreeman\" src=\"https:\/\/aaes.auburn.edu\/wrc\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2014\/04\/MFreeman-150x150.jpg\" width=\"150\" height=\"150\" \/><\/a>\u00a0<\/strong><\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Calibri\"><span style=\"color: #000000;font-size: medium\"><br \/>\nMichael works with Auburn University\u2019s Office of Environmental Safety and Health.<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;font-size: medium\">\u00a0 <\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;font-size: medium\">He has served our country in the US Army and the US Coast Guard Reserve as an Environmental Specialist (<\/span><\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/wp.auburn.edu\/aww\/coast-guard-presents-certificate-of-appreciation-to-aww\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline\"><span style=\"color: #0000ff;font-family: Calibri;font-size: medium\">http:\/\/wp.auburn.edu\/aww\/coast-guard-presents-certificate-of-appreciation-to-aww<\/span><\/span><\/a><span style=\"color: #000000;font-family: Calibri;font-size: medium\">). Michael recently joined the AWWA Advisory Committee,   where his passion for life on the water shows in the great ideas and suggestions he\u2019s proposed.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;font-family: Calibri;font-size: medium\"><strong>Christian Miller<br \/>\n<a href=\"https:\/\/aaes.auburn.edu\/wrc\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2014\/04\/Cmiller-2.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Cmiller (2)\" src=\"https:\/\/aaes.auburn.edu\/wrc\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2014\/04\/Cmiller-2-150x150.jpg\" width=\"150\" height=\"150\" \/><\/a><\/strong><\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;font-family: Calibri;font-size: medium\"><br \/>\nChristian is an Extension Specialist in Nonpoint Pollution at the Auburn University Marine Extension and Research Center in Mobile (<\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/masgc.org\/about\/staff\/christian-miller1\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline\"><span style=\"color: #0000ff;font-family: Calibri;font-size: medium\">http:\/\/masgc.org\/about\/staff\/christian-miller1<\/span><\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-family: Calibri\"><span style=\"color: #000000;font-size: medium\">). He also serves as the Coastal Basin Facilitator for the Alabama Clean Water Partnership and the Coordinator of the Alabama-Mississippi Clean Marina Program.<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;font-size: medium\">\u00a0 <\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;font-size: medium\">Christian completed his first Water Chemistry Internship at a workshop in Spanish Fort this past February,   helping to certify 15 new monitors.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Calibri\"><span style=\"color: #000000;font-size: medium\"><strong>Stephen Morros<br \/>\n<a href=\"https:\/\/aaes.auburn.edu\/wrc\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2014\/04\/SMorros.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" alt=\"SMorros\" src=\"https:\/\/aaes.auburn.edu\/wrc\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2014\/04\/SMorros-150x150.jpg\" width=\"150\" height=\"150\" \/><\/a><\/strong><\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Calibri\"><span style=\"color: #000000;font-size: medium\"><br \/>\nStephen works for a healthcare technology company in Birmingham, but tries to spend as much time as possible at his home on Smith Lake.<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;font-size: medium\">\u00a0 <\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;font-size: medium\">He serves as the secretary for SLEPC (Smith Lake Environmental Preservation Committee, <\/span><\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.slepc.org\/about_us.html\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline\"><span style=\"color: #0000ff;font-family: Calibri;font-size: medium\">http:\/\/www.slepc.org\/about_us.html<\/span><\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-family: Calibri\"><span style=\"color: #000000;font-size: medium\">), and is the music director for the Steel City Men\u2019s Chorus.<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;font-size: medium\">\u00a0 <\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;font-size: medium\">Over the years Stephen has noticed water clarity deteriorate as development on Smith Lake continues and wants to help preserve the pristine waters of the lake.<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;font-size: medium\">\u00a0 <\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;font-size: medium\">He\u2019s willing to conduct workshops in Birmingham during the week and in Cullman County on weekends.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;font-family: Calibri;font-size: medium\"><strong>Linda Ruethemann<br \/>\n<a href=\"https:\/\/aaes.auburn.edu\/wrc\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2014\/04\/LRutheman.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" alt=\"LRutheman\" src=\"https:\/\/aaes.auburn.edu\/wrc\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2014\/04\/LRutheman-150x150.png\" width=\"150\" height=\"150\" \/><\/a><\/strong><\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;font-family: Calibri;font-size: medium\"><br \/>\nLinda retired as Human Resources Director from AT &amp; T in 2002 and moved to Logan Martin Lake, where she serves as the Vice President for Logan Martin Lake Protection Association (<\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.lmlpa.org\/about\/officers-and-board-members\/\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline\"><span style=\"color: #0000ff;font-family: Calibri;font-size: medium\">http:\/\/www.lmlpa.org\/about\/officers-and-board-members\/<\/span><\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-family: Calibri\"><span style=\"color: #000000;font-size: medium\">). Linda has always enjoyed helping people tackle and understand new information, and is looking forward to training new water monitors.<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;font-size: medium\">\u00a0 <\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;font-size: medium\">She\u2019s been a water monitor for almost ten years, so her years of training experience and water monitoring are a great combo!<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;font-size: medium\">\u00a0 <\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;font-size: medium\">Linda is interested in training in Central Alabama, but will consider helping with workshops in North Alabama as needed.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"font-family: Calibri\"><span style=\"color: #000000;font-size: medium\">Susan (Soos) Weber<br \/>\n<a href=\"https:\/\/aaes.auburn.edu\/wrc\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2014\/04\/SWebber.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" alt=\"SWebber\" src=\"https:\/\/aaes.auburn.edu\/wrc\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2014\/04\/SWebber-150x150.jpg\" width=\"150\" height=\"150\" \/><\/a><\/span><\/span><\/strong><span style=\"font-family: Calibri\"><span style=\"color: #000000;font-size: medium\"><br \/>\nSoos lives in Huntsville and is a forest and wetland ecologist.<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;font-size: medium\">\u00a0 <\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;font-size: medium\">She serves as Vice President of the Flint River Conservation Association and works with several other environmental initiatives in Madison County (<\/span><\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/flintriverconservation.org\/blog\/?page_id=28\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline\"><span style=\"color: #0000ff;font-family: Calibri;font-size: medium\">http:\/\/flintriverconservation.org\/blog\/?page_id=28<\/span><\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-family: Calibri\"><span style=\"color: #000000;font-size: medium\">). <\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;font-size: medium\">\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;font-size: medium\">Just to show what a go-getter Soos is \u2013 she\u2019s already helped certify 13 new monitors during her Trainer Internship at a Bacteriological workshop conducted at A &amp; M University a couple of weeks ago!
