He specifically focused on a prominent stream restoration site in the heart of campus. \u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong><span data-contrast=\"auto\" xml:lang=\"EN-US\" lang=\"EN-US\" class=\"TextRun SCXW93605635 BCX4\"><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW93605635 BCX4\">This article outlines by month the work done, and <\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW93605635 BCX4\">documents the changes that just one person can have <\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun ContextualSpellingAndGrammarErrorV2Themed GrammarErrorHighlight SCXW93605635 BCX4\">on<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW93605635 BCX4\"> an area when they consistently work on removing <\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW93605635 BCX4\">invasives<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW93605635 BCX4\"> and caring for native plants. There was a 20 foot patch of kudzu at the site which<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW76087303 BCX4\"><span data-contrast=\"auto\" xml:lang=\"EN-US\" lang=\"EN-US\" class=\"TextRun SCXW108045676 BCX4\"><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW108045676 BCX4\"> looks just like an <\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW108045676 BCX4\">impenetrable wall of green. This was a particularly large <\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun ContextualSpellingAndGrammarErrorV2Themed SCXW223534170 BCX4\">pile<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW223534170 BCX4\"> but I tried to get about this much out once a week<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW223534170 BCX4\">, every week. Into this cut I would target-spray a <\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW7578159 BCX4\">solution<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW7578159 BCX4\"> of 40% glyphosate with blue ma<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW7578159 BCX4\">rking dye added<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW7578159 BCX4\"> (it is important to keep this herbicide limited to only the target plant). In a week or so the vine would be dead and <\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW7578159 BCX4\">be able to be removed easily from the host.\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span class=\"EOP SCXW7578159 BCX4\" data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/div>\n<div><span><\/span><\/div>\n<div><span><\/span><\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>[\/et_pb_text][et_pb_text _builder_version=&#8221;4.27.4&#8243; _module_preset=&#8221;default&#8221; custom_padding=&#8221;0px||3px|||&#8221; global_colors_info=&#8221;{}&#8221;]<\/p>\n<p><b>January-February<\/b><\/p>\n<div>\n<div><span data-contrast=\"auto\" xml:lang=\"EN-US\" lang=\"EN-US\" class=\"TextRun SCXW200177944 BCX4\"><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW200177944 BCX4\">The weather had fully turned cold at this point, there were no leaves on the trees and most plants had either died back or entered dormancy. <\/span><\/span><\/div>\n<div><span data-contrast=\"auto\" xml:lang=\"EN-US\" lang=\"EN-US\" class=\"TextRun SCXW200177944 BCX4\"><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW200177944 BCX4\">In order to replant native plants along the stream, we needed to clear the current invasives so we could install live stakes (dormant cuttings of native plants). When plants are dormant is an ideal time to remove kudzu. <span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW172361041 BCX4\">T<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW172361041 BCX4\">otal kudzu removal can take months but is possible. Even in this state the <\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW172361041 BCX4\">vines <\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW172361041 BCX4\">remain<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW172361041 BCX4\"> rubbery and difficult to <\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun ContextualSpellingAndGrammarErrorV2Themed SCXW172361041 BCX4\">cut,<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW172361041 BCX4\"> it is important when beginning removal to cut the root ball out &#8211; the point <\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW172361041 BCX4\">where<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW172361041 BCX4\"> all the vines sprout from. We harvested stakes<span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW184647996 BCX4\">\u00a0from silky willows and smooth alders, two trees th<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW184647996 BCX4\">at take very well to live stakes and flooded conditions.
