AWW Volunteer Trainer Hana Berres<\/strong> and Trainer Intern Dana Herren<\/strong> recently trained the Ruffner Mountain environmental programs staff in AWW Water Chemistry Monitoring. Let’s take a look into their workshop!<\/p>\n

Ruffner Mountain is a 1,000+ acre nature preserve in Birmingham that was established back in 1977 with a mission “to advance the understanding of ecology in our rapidly changing world.” It is a beautiful place to hike for the day, or visit their Nature Center!<\/p>\n

The Water Chemistry Workshop was featured in Ruffner Mountain’s monthly newsletter,\u00a0Interconnected.<\/em> The newsletter said the following about the workshop:<\/p>\n

“In March, Ruffner staff and a few locals with an interest in ecology gathered at Ruffner Mountain for a one-day training course with Alabama Water Watch. Trainer Hana Berres led the group, sharing a wealth of information on watersheds of Alabama, key water monitoring terms, and the state of waterways pollution in Alabama.”<\/p>\n

AWW Trainer Intern Dana Herren assists a volunteer with Water Chemistry methods.<\/p><\/div>\n

“Later, the group ventured to The Wetlands to monitor its water quality, test for pH and temperature, and oxygen saturation, alkalinity, hardness, and other measures. Overall, the water, which feeds into the Shades Creek Watershed, was quite healthy, with a pH of 7.0, moderate hardness, and low turbidity. Many thanks to Hana Berres and Alabama Water Watch for visiting Ruffner and advancing the understanding of water quality and the importance of Alabama’s waterways!”<\/p>\n
