Auburn University Water Resources Center (AUWRC)<\/a> staff recently participated in two events aimed at educating kids about Alabama\u2019s water resources and ecosystems.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The Barbour County Extension Office hosted the Barbour County 6<\/span>th<\/span> Grade Lake Day at Lake Eufaula on April 28, 2023. About 130 sixth graders from several Barbour County schools learned about Lake Eufaula, its wildlife, and the importance of protecting its water resources and ecosystems. <\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

AU<\/span>WRC staff Jessie Curl and Adam Newby <\/span>informed students about the importance of water quality and how they can help keep our waters clean.<\/span> <\/span>Using a display of<\/span> aquatic macroinvertebrates<\/span>, Curl and Newby<\/span> explained how certain species act as indicators of good water quality. <\/span>Students also learned about water safety, wildlife conservation, water conservation, and how to properly fish from other agencies including the <\/span>Barbour County Extension Office<\/span>,<\/span> <\/span>U<\/span>.<\/span>S<\/span>.<\/span> <\/span>A<\/span>rmy <\/span>C<\/span>orps of <\/span>E<\/span>ngineers<\/span> Park Rangers, <\/span>the <\/span>U.S. Coast Guard Eufaula<\/span> <\/span>Station, <\/span>and the <\/span>City of Eufaula<\/span>.<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

On May 17,<\/span> 2023,<\/span> t<\/span>he Chambers County Extension Office hosted its second annual Groundwater Festival at West Point Lake<\/a><\/span>. <\/span>A<\/span>pproximately<\/span> 250 <\/span>fourth graders<\/span> from <\/span>area schools learned about water safety and water conservation. <\/span>AU<\/span>WRC staff Sydney <\/span>Zinner<\/span> and Adam Newby <\/span>demonstrated<\/span> water pollution and the importance of water testing. They also showed students aquatic macroinvertebrate<\/span> <\/span>s<\/span>pecimens<\/span> that help <\/span>indicate<\/span> water quality<\/span>.<\/span> Alabama Extension staff taught students about the water cycle<\/span> while<\/span> U<\/span>.<\/span>S<\/span>.<\/span> Army Corps of Engineers Park Rangers and the Swift Water Resource Team of the East Alabama Fire Department taught water rescue techniques.\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

The <\/span>Alabama Department of <\/span>Environmental<\/span> Management <\/span>demonstrated<\/span> how several pollutants affect water quality. A conservationist from the<\/span> USDA<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>National Resources Conservation Service District used a rainfall erosion simulator <\/span>to <\/span>demonstr<\/span>ate<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>sediment run-off pollution. <\/span>Finally, a fish biologist with the Alabama Department of Conservation and Natural Resourc<\/span>es <\/span>tau<\/span>ght<\/span> students about fish species that can be found in West Point Lake.<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The mission of the Auburn University Water Resources Center is to facilitate interdisciplinary collaboration among Auburn University faculty and staff on water-related research, outreach, and instruction; conduct innovative research to find practical solutions for current and future water issues and empower private citizens to become active stewards of water resources.<\/em><\/p>\n
