DESCRIPTION:  \nRegistration is required! \nAlabama Water Watch\, in partnership with the USDA Forest Service and Wild Alabama\, is excited to announce Phase III of the water monitoring project in the National Forests in Alabama! \nThis project’s goal is to promote citizens to discover the national forests in Alabama…by monitoring their waters!  Volunteer citizens will gather water chemistry and bacteriological monitoring data on select stream locations within the National Forests in Alabama. Read more about Water Chemistry and Bacteriological Monitoring here. \nTwo hybrid (virtual and in-person components) water quality monitoring trainings will be held in March through May 2024 for the Oakmulgee and Bankhead/ Bankhead National Forests. \nEach workshop will cover information related to the water environment\, forests and watershed health\, pollution\, water quality standards\, and data management. Training participants will be trained and certified in AWW Water Chemistry and Bacteriological Monitoring. Although these trainings are focused on the USFS Project and monitoring sites in the NFAL\, they are open to anyone interested in getting certified as AWW Water Monitors. \nParticipants will head outdoors to conduct monitoring practices and visit pre-selected monitoring sites on the National Forests. \nProfessional Development Hours are available through PowerSchool for educators who complete training. Participants will learn to use the Alabama Rivers book and accompanying Educator’s Guide to Alabama Rivers to celebrate Alabama’s magnificent rivers and how they have been shaped by geology over the ages with their students. We will learn about some of the unique plants and animals as well as noteworthy people who have called Alabama home. We will also learn to use resources and activities found in the Guide to challenge their students to restore and protect our rivers for their economic\, cultural\, and ecological benefits\, but most of all because it is the right thing to do. \nThe curriculum is correlated to the AL Course of Study Standards for Social Studies and Science for grades 4-7\, but is also adaptable for upper grades and other subjects. \nParticipants who complete the Alabama Rivers Workshop will receive: \n\nCertification as Alabama Rivers Educator\nCopy of the book Alabama Rivers\, A Celebration & Challenge\,\nCopy of An Educator’s Guide to Alabama Rivers\nAccess to online digital resources that support activities and lessons\n8 hours of CEUs from Auburn University Office of Outreach and/or PowerSchool\nLunch and snacks during the workshop.

DESCRIPTION:Alabama Water Watch Family Stream Biomonitoring Workshop \nCANCELLED\nJoin us for the first-ever Alabama Water Watch Family Workshop!  \nWe invite families with children of all ages to explore the creek at Auburn University’s Kreher Preserve & Nature Center for aquatic critters and engage in hands-on activities about watershed stewardship. \nThis workshop will be most impactful for elementary and middle-school aged children (5-12)\, although all children are invited to participate with their families. Parents/guardians will be responsible for their child(ren) for the entire workshop. \nSaturday\, May 20\, 2023 from 9am – 12pm  \nLocation\nKreher Preserve & Nature Center\n2222 N College St\nAuburn\, AL 36830 \nRegistration Fees \nRegistration is $5 for each participant in the family. Note: Your registration is not complete until your payment is received. You will be provided with payment options at the end of this registration form. Registration closes on May 15th. No refunds will be given after that deadline. \nWhat to Expect \nThis workshop will have virtual and in-person components and will cover information related to the water environment\, watershed health\, pollution\, water quality standards\, and how to use stream critters to determine water quality. To make the most of your experience during the workshop\, parents/guardians will go through the Introduction to Alabama Water Watch Online Course to be introduced to our program and citizen science. \nKids will get up close and personal with critters of the creek! They will collect aquatic macroinvertebrates using nets and pans\, conduct simple identification\, and help determine a biotic index as an indicator of water quality. Kids will also participate in hands-on activities focused on water pollution and adaptations of macroinvertebrates. \nAWW Monitoring Certification in Stream Biomonitoring is available for parents and guardians who complete additional requirements. If you are seeking recertification\, please contact the Alabama Water Watch Office. \nTraining Description: Become a certified Volunteer Monitor through this hybrid (online and in-person) training opportunity! Available certifications include AWW Water Chemistry Monitoring and Bacteriological Monitoring. You must complete each of the steps outlined below to receive your monitoring certification. \nThis workshop is provided in conjunction with Alabama Watershed Stewards (AWS)\, a statewide science-based educational program that promotes healthy watersheds\, increases understanding of water pollution\, and provides the knowledge to prevent and resolve local water quality problems. AWS is funded by a Clean Water Act 319 Partnership grant through the Alabama Department of Environmental Management and EPA Region 4. \nFollow these steps to get started:\n1.  Register for training through this form by February 21st\, 2023.\n2.  Select the monitoring type(s) for which you would like certification through this form. \nOn February 21st \n\nParticipate in the Kick-Off Zoom from 12-1 pm. This is not required for certification but will help you navigate the training process and meet AWW Staff. \n\nUse the link and instructions you receive via email following the Kick-Off Zoom to enroll in the Online Courses required for the certification type(s) you requested.\n\nBy Midnight on March 7th\n\nComplete the self-paced\, online coursework for the monitoring type(s) of interest.\n\nIntroduction to AL Water Watch – This course is required for all monitoring types and must be completed to unlock all other AWW Online Courses. (1 hour)\nBacteriological Monitoring Course (90 minutes)\nWater Chemistry Monitoring Course (2 hours)\n\n\n\nOn March 10th\nAttend the in-person Field Day at Noccalula Falls Park in Gadsden where you will demonstrate your ability to conduct monitoring tests under the observation of an AWW Trainer.
