Auxin herbicide training
February 28, 2017 @ 8:00 am - 1:00 pm
New cotton and soybean varieties with resistance to several common herbicides are now available. In January, the Alabama Department of Agriculture and Industries submitted new labeling for products containing 2,4-D or dicamba that are intended to be used in conjunction with these new varieties. Alabama Extension will hold trainings across the state for farmers who plan to use these products. Joyce Tredaway, an Alabama Extension weed scientist, said that these trainings are not only important but are mandatory. “It will be mandatory for any applicator that will use XtendiMax, Engenia, or EnlistDuo to attend one of these trainings,” said Tredaway. “They will learn the application requirements that are specific to Alabama’s 24c label. If anyone wants to use any variety with the new dicamba or 2,4-D technology, they will be required to attend one of the trainings that will be held across the state.” Tredaway said the training is intended to help applicators reduce incidents of herbicide drift to susceptible crops, technical application methods, tank cleanout, and information about the new chemistries. Producers may have attended similar trainings in neighboring states, but they will still need to attend the Alabama Extension trainings if they will using these herbicides. “It may not be just farmers who need the trainings,” she said. “If a farmer contracts out his spray program, the person applying these products on cotton and soybeans in crop must receive this training.” At these trainings, commercial applicators will receive pesticide recertification credit upon completion and certified crop advisors will also receive points. Registration for the training can be done online at www.aces.edu/go/707. The cost for the training is $10 and lunch or dinner will be provided at each location.
